Sue Carter/Friedel

Sue, welcome to the blog! We all hope you have many unique perspectives about all of our experiences in the western part of Chautauqua County. Perhaps the Hewins area is a fertile territory to explore. As an opening question--was it your father who ran the general store in Hewins? I seem to remember standing around that store with my dad drinking soda pop.

Let us hear from you.

Was it your dad who owned, or ran, the John Deere dealership in CV??

Wayne, since no one else has answered you, Sue's dad was not the one who had The John Deere agency. That was Frank Carter. Earl, Sue's dad owned and managed the general store/post office in Hewins until his death.

Thanks, Don. We lived in the house next door to Frank Carter's before they moved in. I think their daughter was Juanell?? Were they related to Earl??

Thanks, Don. I have many fond memories of that little general store. I can just see the layout in my mind. My dad and I stopped every time we were delivering gas in the Hewins area.

Thanks for the reply, Don. It is always nice when you ask a question to have someone give an answer.

Sue - Welcome to the blog. I'm looking forward to your stories about Hewins. There's got to be a lot to tell.

Do you have the facts about your uncle (Glen?) marrying his wife at the world's fair? Something about wheeling her in a wheelbarrow? I think that would be great to read.

Anything about Joe Leonard? He told me that he remembered when Biffle Gordon and her sister were young flappers. They would come to the post office to get the mail and they would pay a little attention to him (he was younger) and how it pleased him.

I'm sure you have a lot of stories about your folks and the store.
Such fertile ground from which to draw! Go for it!!

Wayne - Frank Carter's daughter Juanell married Verne Sweaney some 50 odd years ago.

Hey, Sue!

Diane ... what was Biffle's maiden name?

Diane Archer Bradbury said...

Phil - Biffle's maiden name was Evans. Her dad was a forman at the Chapman-Barnard Ranch - Wiley Evans. Her older sister was Opal Evans. -Diane

Thanks, Diane ... and to further this dialog a bit, was Opal Evans the mother of Deloris Hall? Probably not ... but I was thinking that her mom was named 'Opal'.

Diane Archer Bradbury said...

Phil,,,Delores Hall's parents were Oliver and Opal Hall. No relation to Opal Evans who married Charley Thompson and lived in Hominy/Tulsa, They are buried in Ozro Falls Cemetary. (Is this too much information?)

For some reason I remember Oliver Hall getting a milk shake every noon at Hankin's. Someone said it was for his ulcers. Talk about an obscure, disconected memory.

Diane, you are font of detailed information about the denizens of our little burg! I enjoy reading all the comments.

Diane, please keep snatching those disconnected items from your memory bank. Biffle is such a great lady, did you know she has a sister in law (Henderson) in Ark City who is 100 years old?
Also--Joe Leonard compiled and wrote a book called HEWINS-A LITTLE HISTORY. It is delight to read, even when he is writing of people of whom you never heard. I think Ernestine Leonard has copies of that book for those of you are into that.

Don - Wanda (Gordon) Henderson, Biffle's sister-in-law is the same age as Biffle - 97. Though she may be 98 now. She and Biffle stay in touch by Wanda's daughter bringing Wanda to see Biffle every month or so. Wanda moved to Presbyterian Manor this past year and both daughters and her son, Jim, have been to visit Biffle.

I'll look into getting the Hewins book. Thanks for telling me about it. I know Biffle will be interested if she doesn't already have it.

Thanks for the encouragement for the recollections that keep popping up.

Henderson ... it is my understanding that a girl from Dexter, (Sandra Henderson Eastman ... now living in Ark City), is a cousin to actress Elizabeth Taylor.

Elizabeth briefly lived in Ark City with her grandparents as a young girl.

I'll ask about the cousin of Liz when I go to water aerobics Thursday morning at Ark City. These gals know everything!

DFCox said...

Wanda Gordon Henderson's son, Jim, is/was a frat brother of mine while at Manhattan (The Little Apple).

Diane Archer Bradbury said...

Don - I had always heard Jim was a BMOC. I was told what a good looking man he was but I don't remember ever meeting him even though he was Tom's first cousin. Biffle says he's still handsome.
His sisters are Floy June and Guyla.

Phil Foust said...

A BMOC?

DFCox said...

Big Man On Campus = BMOC

The "girls" at the pool tell me Liz's cousin has been deceased for some years. It got them talking about the house where the family lived and other things.

I want you to know that Biffle is doing great. Did I tell you she was voted "Valentine Queen" at Rest Haven? She was really tickled about this and was totally surprised when it was announced. She's such an optimistic person and so rarely has a complaint of any kind. She never hangs up or says good-bye in person without adding "I love you."
