REMEMBER THIS

This past weekend, while driving to a roping event in Laughlin, NV, Nancy was driving and I was surfing the Sirius radio channels. This caught my attention. "Shot from guns, Quaker puffed wheat and Quaker puffed rice brings you Sargent Preston of the Yukon and his dog King" I recall as a young ignorant farm boy,how and why did they shoot puffed rice and wheat fromn guns. Now...that I am certainly older and supposedly wiser, I still don't know how and why they shoot puffed rice and wheat from guns.

Oh well, to continue...By sending 35 cents and a box top from Quaker puffed rice or Quaker puffed wheat, you can receive a 14 carat gold plated whistle with braided necklace, just like Sargent Preston has. Heck...35 cents wouldn't even pay the postage now. Anyway Sargent Preston and King still have it. In the midst of a blizzard they captured the thief"s holed up in an abandon cabin.

Other episodes where Fibber McGee and Molly, Jack Benny with Frankie Frontain, Bob Hope with Roy Rogers and Dale Evans and Dragnet was coming on..and I was going out. You know you are getting old when "Happy Hour" is a nap. Perhaps some of you may relate to that.

I got a decoder ring with a whistle in it. I think from "Captain Midnight" The d--n thing didn't decode anything. But it was made of real gold, and cost fifty cents. I really liked Amos and Andy, but of course now they wouldn't be politically correct???

Gary, In your roping trips did you ever run into Jim Powell from Las Cruces, NM. He is about your age and is also dumb enough to risk his health riding those big horses. About twenty years ago a friend of mine here was roping and his horse did fall on him and he has been in a chair ever since. Be careful, friend.

Jack Benny and Frankie Fontaine?? I remember Rochester, Dennis Day, and Mary, but no Fontaine. Was he the orchestra leader?
My favorite was Jack Armstrong-All American Boy--Wheaties was his sponser. Once I was in my favorite listening chair- a "fold up" rocker- sitting in it backwards with my ear cocked to the little Emerson table radio. Well I got too excited listening to Captain Midnight or something and I rocked over backwards and, of course, the chair captured me, folded me in with the weight of my body folding it tighter and my legs spraddled to the side. I could do nothing but howl and my Mother and sisters were laughing so hard they were in no hurry to rescue me. OH THE EMBARASSMENT!!

Wayne, I, too, ordered the decoder ring, with the same results. As for all those old radio shows, I can remember every one and even sometimes the sponsors. Great memory piece, Gary.

I believe that Frankie Fontaine was a comedian. I don't remember too much about him.

Frankie Fontaine was a comedian on the Jackie Gleason show and also a gifted tenor. His character was "Crazy Guggenheim" and he had a distinctive laugh.

I remembered he was a singer, so I googled him and got the above information.

Wayne - I do not know a Jim Powell. I know a Sid Savage from Las Cruces, I believe he is a stock broker. Thank you for your concern and warning. Roping does have its dangers as I can attest to every time I look at my hand and see the end of my thumb missing. ( Not an uncommom thing with ropers) I do know of ropers who have been seriously injured or killed. It seems in my life I have always chose hobbies, skiing, hunting, motor cycling, flying, etc. that have an additional element of danger involved with the sport Since it's a sport I thoroughly enjoy, I am willing to take the risk.

Tom - Good to hear from you. I usually go to Laughlin in Nov and March, which are fairly large USTRC ropings.

Howdy, Tom ... where do you live and do you have a family?
