FYI

For those who may remember Donna Jean (Hill) Shanks, her husband Bob died yesterday. They were driving from their home in Longmont Colo. into the mountains to see their daughter when Bob complained of feeling ill. He pulled to the side of the road and expired almost immediately of a massive heart attack. He has been cremated and services will be April 4th. Grandchildren are scattered around the world.

Donna Jean was CVHS class of 1948--you may remember her younger brother Jim Hill who was Class of '52 (I think)

Don, thanks for putting this up. I can't quite remember Donna Jean or her brother, Jim. Some of our fellow bloggers may remember them though.

Yes, I certainly remember Donna Jean, and Vonda Risch. They always seemed to hang out together and as a little boy I thought they were the most glamorous and sexy things. They wore SHORTS. Sorry to hear of her loss.

Don, was Shanks from Ark City?? I played baseball with a Shanks on the Ark City legion team and the Bob May Builders team.

I didn't know Shanks in that time, but I've been told that Treva Prather (another glamorous young lady of those times) was the girlfriend of Shanks and she and Donna Jean, being best buddies, decided to exchange boy friends. As you can see it worked for Donna and Bob. I think this was in the Wichita area--not sure.

Wayne...I think the Shanks you played ball with was from Ark City and his name was Don. He would be several years younger than Donna Jean. I doubt if he was Donna's husband.

Yes, Gary, Don Shanks sounds familiar, now that you remind me. Did you know him? He was a good ball player.

Don Shank's granddaughter, (Jodi Sanderholm), was tragically sexually assaulted and murdered near Ark City. The trial is ongoing (I believe) and has been assisted by the Kansas Attorney General. Jodi was an outstanding attractive girl and specialized in dance. She was a member of the Cowley College Dance Team.

Don Shanks is a retired insurance man from United Agency in Ark City. Working with him while in Real Estate at the agency allowed me to realize him as a good man.

Same fellow, Phil, I am sure. He was slightly older than I and bigger. I remember on one road trip with the Bob May Builders team, his girl friend/fiance? was sort of flirting with me, and I was scared to death that he was going to beat the whey out of me. But being a nice guy, he did not.

I didn't know this about Donna Jean's husband, Bob. Donna and I were good friends and have kept in touch all these years. Sometimes only at Christmas with letters, but information all about our families.Bob was from the Wichita area and a very handsome man. Donna and Bob became very religious. I'll have to look at letters I've saved to refresh my memory on this because a son is a preacher and a daughter/granddaughter missionaries. I know they were into it big time and the bulk of her Christmas letters were all about their church. I remember going to Wichita to a Horace Heidt (sp/??)contest. Donna sang - really belted out the song. Squirlley Hill and Aldine (her parents) and I went backstage and met Horace Heidt. He said Donna Jean had real talent and the propensity for a career in entertainment. I'll be getting in touch with her next week by telephone. Again - such sad news.
