Passing of Effie Foster

I am sorry to inform all that Effie died this past weekend. She was in the Dexter Care Facility and was 102 years old. I know several of you had Effie as a teacher in your youth--I suppose that if anyone had memories of Effie to share, this would be a good place to do it. You could make a comment to this announcement or make a new entry.
Services are today at 1:30--graveside in the Cedar Vale Cemetery.

Effie was my favorite teacher. This big, raw boned farm woman was a fierce and loving presence to the thirty some kids in our class. Her zest for living showed us how to live passionately. I can say that I am who I am today, in part, due to her example. Bon Voyage, Effie. You are still showing us the way.

For those who are too young to remember Effie Foster, she was the 6th grade teacher at CV Grade School for many years. She was renowned as a strict disciplinarian with a soft heart. She always read Uncle Tom's Cabin to each class and wept in the sad parts. Not known for her careful dressing, you could generally see her slip showing beneath her skirt. Some of the boys remember being afraid of her, but that would only be because they crossed her. If you were good and well behaved she would never twist your ear or hit you. I mostly remember her zest for living and good humor. She had a hand in shaping many of us as we grew up in CV.
