Crystal Radios

Wayne's post about electricity has really sent me down memory lane today. How many of you remember crystal radio receivers? My uncle Lee made one and used it to bring in distant signals from Coffeyville or Arkansas City. I just looked up a good article on the subject in case you want to be reminded. HERE

I tried several times to make one, but never was successful. Did any of you try to build a crystal set?

I never tried to build a crystal set, but I did build a Heathkit FM radio, followed by a TV set. Both worked, but I found that TV made by Toshiba and Samsung worked more reliably than my Heathkit. Can't beat those Japanese.

I, too, built a Heathkit radio. It worked after Glen Toothacher at Adams radio repair found and corrected my cold solder joints. It had little coils for each of the radio bands. You inserted a coil and could scan one band at a time.

Building the Heathkit taught us a lot. Taught us to be meticulous in our solder joints, at least. And taught us to not touch certain parts when the electricity was "on".

Interesting observation, Phil. It sure made me wonder about its significance!

Gary, Phil must have been out there somewhere with that comment.

...was just admitting that my knowledge of the subject was pretty much nil.
