I don't know the population of Cedar Vale now ... but probably in the neighborhood of 700." Thank you, Pat ... for this very interesting information.

Wow, times HAVE changed. Remember in the early '50's the Peru Brick Factory was a full, standing building; now look at it.
Where was the second lumber yard in CV??
The list I have simply says: "Burgner-Bowman-Matthews Lumber Co. (branch of Kansas City, MO) and Long-Bell Lumber Co. (branch of Kansas City, MO). My Uncle Forrest (Brownie) Brown, married to Marie Comer, (Annie Pate's and Cora Mattocks' sister) was manager of one of them years before my time. He was born and raised in Dexter.
I think it was Clyde Shaffer's BBM yard that was right behind the city offices?? Where was the other.?
Interesting article, Phil!
If memory serves me correctly, the Long-Bell Lumber Co. was sold to the Burgner-Bowman-Matthews Lumber Co., before my Dad, Clyde Shaffer, became manager. The Long name refers to R.A. Long, well-known lumberman, with headquarters in K.C. Some of you may have heard of the Longview Farm in Lee's Summit, MO. Years ago, it was famous for its hackney horses, ridden most expertly by Lula Belle LONG Combs, R.A.'s daughter!
Point being that the Long-Bell Lumber Co. and B-B-M Lumber Co. were "housed" in the same lumber yard! If there was another "yard," I don't know about it!
Was there another little yard somewhere down close to the Santa Fe Addition??
