Of all the memories I've had of Cedar Vale,
one that sticks in my mind are the
"nick-names" given to its inhabitants! I'll venture forth with one, cast on myself! I was known as "Big Clyde!, according to the yearbook! Makes me feel good that my Dad's name was included. And, the modest person I am, I did have a wicked basketball, "hook-shot," ala Clyde Lovellette, my K.U. hero! I might add that "it" was wicked in practice, but I never dared to take that shot in a game!
Well, here goes with some of the "nick-names" I remember!
"Jimpy" Lefler, barber
"Frog" Beaver, a jack of all trades
"Speedy" Harold Bohannan, who once ran down a sure touchdown!
"Earl, the Pearl," Vore, a great town-team basketball player....
I'm sure you have many more! Like to hear of them!
P.S. I once heard "Frog" Beaver say, "when my wife says, "Frog,!" I JUMP!!!!! True story!

...and then there was..
"Dictionary Webster!"
"Dictionary" Webster, came to Cedar Vale from Wauneta, in his overalls! He had a shock of hair tht went this way and that!
Yet, he had a smile that met the jibes that came his way,
with words from his dictionary,
that he had learned that day.
How I wish I had told him that WHAT HE KNEW, was more than what we knew! How I wish that I had told him that his yearning for learning far exceeded that of ours!
Don't know what happened to "Dictionary." He could have landed as an auto-repair guy in Wauneta. I only know this. He would have given his customer the "words" of life. He would have pulled out that tattered dictionary and said, "Guess what I learned today!"
"Dictionary," wherever you are, I learn from you each day!
Don, you leave me wanting to learn more of ole "Dictionary" Webster. I don't remember him ... but would certainly pay a quarter (okay, a dime) to know more of his background and life. BTW your "nicknames" blog is pretty darn good!
Thanks, Phil. I'll try to find out more about "Dictionary!" I might have an old annual class picture, with him in it. As I remember, he did not graduate with our class. You might say "he was in a class" all his own!
When I was about four, our family moved to Cedar Vale from a farm between Sedan and Longton. I brought along my best friend, Jippy. I remember Momma or Daddy telling me the barber in town was also named Jippy. The difference being Jippy (Jimpy?) was real whereas my friend and playmate was imaginary.
A few other nick names from the area might include:
"Zeke" Hollister, (brother of "Pistol" Hollister),
"Cot" Carl Bohannon,
"Buckshot" Beryl Bohannon,
"Shorty" Layton,
"Whitey" Yates,
"Alfie" Alfred Burdette,
"Owlhead" "Jr" Maurice Utt,
"Wes" Wesley Duncan,
"Fess" Lyman Fesler,
"Little Hully" Larman Holroyd,
"Renny" Renholt Peterson,
"Dub" Johnston,
"Shorty" Gerald Magnus,
Wasn't there someone called "Grunt" Monday or was it "Dub" Monday?
Ben Johnson, the late actor, was often called "Son" Ben Johnson by his local cowboy friends and some referred to his father as "Old Ben" Ben Johnson.
Son Johnson, Dub Monday
Dub was Grunt Monday's son???
